Safe, Effective Hair Restoration

Hair transplantation is a very safe, relatively minor surgical procedure in which hair follicles from a permanent hair-bearing area of the scalp are removed and transplanted into thinning or balding areas.

Transplantable hair from the interior and lateral posterior fringe, which is genetically predetermined not to fall out, is placed into the frontal area in the form of individual follicular units. Because the transplanted hair is generally not sensitive to the male hormone DHT, it will continue to grow in its new location throughout the lifetime of the patient—regardless of the aging process, physical activities, individual hairstyles, or personal hair care preferences.

Follicular hair transplantation is in no way similar to hair transplantation techniques used decades ago that often resulted in the "pluggy", "doll’s head" appearance that resulted from the loss of surrounding natural hair units during the aging process. Dr. Bilowus specializes in the repair of previous transplantations, in which patients have been disfigured by such procedures. Occasionally, some of these “plugs” must be removed and dissected into micro-follicular units, which are then placed into a new location to create a more natural look. This often requires a considerable degree of artistic talent compared to the cut and defined preplanned placement methods employed by other surgeons.

Dr. Bilowus is especially adept at achieving these uniquely natural results. His surgical hair restoration system is a synthesis of research, new innovations, and worldwide-published techniques. Dr. Bilowus’ innovations in local anesthesia and oral sedation make the procedure painless, pleasant, and exceptionally safe. If you’re a healthy person with no significant health problems, minimal preoperative testing will be necessary. Occasionally, some patients may require medical or cardiac clearance should there be risk factors involved. Dr. Bilowus will perform a personal medical screening at the time of your consultation.

Some hair restoration surgeons neglect the importance of proper hair angulation when placing the micro-grafts. This often results in an unnatural hairline, causing difficulty with combing and style ability especially as the patient ages. Dr. Bilowus specializes on the position and placement of micro-grafts, and applies particular emphasis to the lateral peaks—an area largely ignored by other surgeons. He believes that the angle of each micro-incision must parallel the surrounding hears in three dimensions. Ultimately, the transplanted follicular units cannot be distinguished from the patient’s surrounding hair, and enables patients to maintain their hairstyle preferences.

Dr. Bilowus feels that is important in almost all cases to graft the lateral peaks in addition to the frontal area since they will ultimately recede. This prevents the creation of a frontal forelock appearance, and thereby also removes the perception that the patient has had a transplantation procedure. Dr. Bilowus designs each surgical procedure so that the patient will achieve a healthy, natural look after a single procedure. However, if additional density is desired, a subsequent session within the same boundaries created by the new hairline will provide additional fullness.

Dr. Bilowus maps the amount of scalp area requiring restoration using a grid system, and then determines the total number of follicular units necessary to restore the thinning area. The size of the donor strip of hair is determined from these measurements—traditionally this donor strip measures 1 cm in width and 22 cm in length. Removal of the donor strip results in a single incision, which after complete healing is difficult to see by anyone other than your barber or hairstylist. Subsequent procedures always remove pre-existing scar tissue and result in a solitary curvilinear scar, which is covered by the surrounding hair on the back of the head. Rarely can donor hair be obtained from other areas of the body if the patient is deficient of donor hair at the back of the scalp.

During your consultation, Dr. Bilowus will personally draw your new hairline to give you an idea of the expected results. You will have the opportunity to approve or modify it to meet your own aesthetic preferences. Once again, immediately prior to your surgery, Dr. Bilowus will re-create the new hairline for your final approval. At Bilowus Medical, we strive for your complete satisfaction, and we’ll provide you with realistic expectations of what your improved look will be like after your procedure.
